Just hours after the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, senior Vatican officials have reportedly discovered a sealed handwritten document in his personal study a letter addressed simply to “The One Who Comes After.”
According to two independent Vatican sources who spoke to Dobblog under condition of anonymity, the document was found in the pope’s private quarters at Casa Santa Marta, inside a locked wooden box marked with the papal seal. While its contents remain closely guarded, whispers inside the Apostolic Palace suggest it contains instructions, warnings, and a theological confession that could shake the foundations of the Church.
The timing has sparked global intrigue. Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 after a long illness, gave his final Easter blessing just one day before passing. His death was expected his final message was not.
According to those familiar with the contents of the note, the pope referenced an “era of silence” and cautioned about a “false shepherd” who may seek to ascend after him. One Vatican archivist, who has worked in papal historical preservation for over 20 years, told Dobblog:
“There’s a level of urgency in this note we’ve never seen in recent history. It doesn’t read like a theological reflection it reads like a warning to history.”
Church officials have declined to comment publicly, but late last night, a high-level security meeting was convened inside the Vatican. Unconfirmed reports indicate that surveillance of cardinals entering Rome has intensified fueling speculation that not all is well in the College of Cardinals.
With the conclave expected to begin within two weeks, pressure is mounting. But sources now suggest the process may be delayed indefinitely until the authenticity and meaning of Pope Francis’ final message can be confirmed. Canon law does not explicitly allow for the postponement of a conclave unless under grave circumstances but insiders say that’s exactly the phrase being whispered inside the Curia.
Could the Church be heading for its first real schism since 1378?
